Christmas extends well into February!

So, as I think I forget to mention a long ways back, my husband (beldon) and my best friend (kitsune814) gave me a trip to Manhatten to see a play on Broadway and have dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Well.

We went into the big city on the 19th to see "Spamalot" (http://www.montypythonsspamalot.com/low_band/index.html). I was kinda leary about it, I mean, we still aren't sure if I really even like Month Python, so the idea of being forced to sit through a live performance of their stuff could be cruel and horrible punishment, not to mention a waste of a *lot* of moneys. But, I had a great time! It was based on the movie "Monty Python & the Holy Grail", having a lot of the gags made famous in the movie, including the killer rabbit. It was neat actually seeing Tim Curry in the flesh, who did a good job of playing himself, and I laughed outrageously loudly at the multitalented antics of David Hyde Pierce ("Fraiser") and Hank Azaria ("Birdcage"), who both played multiple roles. But, lest anyone think it's just a rehash of the movie, there were a lot more songs, at least one skit is lengthened, and it had a whole bevy of gorgeous women who played everything from the Lady in the Lake's attendants (Yes, the watery tart actually appears! And, she has a name!) to cocktail waitresses to ohwaitIcannottellyouyouwillhavetogoandseeitforyourself. The costumes were, as may be expected for a Broadway play, really incredible. It was fun, for me at least, to see all the different costumes and to know where they got what and to know how they did some of the stuff and, well, it was just *fabulous* to see them all. So, it was a whole lot of fun and well worth going into NY for.

But wait, there was more-

Yeah, ok, I know, why did they do it? Who knows, who cares, it was really neat, and I was there (and I got a scrap of the fabric!). Hey, people thought I was crazy to do the Grand Opening Campout at IKEA, too. These are the kinds of experiences that're ephemeral physically, but eternal in our minds.

And then we went to the Museum of Natural History for the exhibit "Totems to Turquoise" (http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/totems/). It was pretty and incredible, and we probably spent too much money in the gift shop, but we all enjoyed every bit of it.

So, as this was a very full day, and also because we were not able to get kennel reservations for Malory and Shelley and because Beldon had rehearsal early the next day, we decided *not* to do dinner in the city that eve. Instead, we went to Mohegan Sun the next day and went to Rain(http://www.mohegansun.com/dining/gourmet_rain.jsp#), the classiest restaurant I think any of the three of us have ever been to. beldon had the Five Course Degustation (they just kept bringinf more & more food out and each course had a different wine), which is way more food than kitsune814 nor I could even begin to contemplate so we settled for a First Course (lasagne vedure & tuna tartar) and Main Course (chilean sea bass & monkfish au poivre), then shared a sorbet sampler and a creme brulee sampler- still way too much food but we enjoyed every bite!

It was most probably the best weekend of my life!!!!!!!!!!!

I realize it has been *forever* since I last wrote but I been really really busy, honest I have.

Let's see, since I last wrote anything-
* I've worked with Solveig at the Fetish Fair Fleamarket (not as strange a group as you might think)
* Christmas has come & gone (I got great stuff & gave all my dearest and closest gifts they didn't even know they wanted until they got them)
* The Blizzard of '05 hit while I was at Arisia, in Boston, with kitsune814 and fibrowitch and ssantara and Solveig and a whole lot of other really neat people.

Arisia was really kick-ass fun and I was actually kind of glad we got so totally snowed in that we had to stay until this morning (Monday). A lot of people left real early on Saturday to avoid the snows; they were the Wimpies. A few left Sunday as soon as the ban on driving was lifted enough that the police would listen to such excuses as "I'm only going to insert-name-of-a-Boston-suburb"; they were the Foolish. The rest of us all opened our doors to one another and enjoyed the night, making us the Survivors. Poor kitsune814 fell victim to a deadly version of a cold, too bad we had no Airborne Formula (an herbal remedy that *really* helps to prevent things like that happening in large group situations). But, it did really enliven the "Dead Dog" Party when she succumbed to her cold medicine and was elected the party mascot due to her resemblance to a "dead dog". We propped her up in a corner and threw popcorn at her (oh, and hid her bra in the freezer) but don't anybody tell her, 'kay? She thinks it was all a bad dream. Seriously, it was a very quiet evening, but a very nice one as well. It was great to be able to just relax with friends, eat Lembas I had made (
Lembas

3 eggs
3/4 cup honey
2 Tablespoons grated orange peel,
1 teaspoon each of: almond extract, vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon each of: salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice
1/4 cup melted butter
2-1/4 cups flour
Mallorn leaves

Mix eggs, honey, orange peel, extracts, and spices until smoothly integrated. Blend in butter. Add flour, slowly, mixing well, until dough is one big mass.
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 375º.
Roll dough out very thin, and cut into circular shapes. Bake on cooky sheets for 8 minutes, or until they seem slightly golden around the edges and done.
Cool on a rack. For safe keeping, wrap each lemba individually in a fresh, clean mallorn leaf. If these leaves are unavailable in your area, store the lembas in a tightly closed container, or wrap in banana leaves.

Operation #2 a success?

Well, I *think* it's successful, anyway. I had the bandages changed on Monday amd since then, as I've been able to move my left arm, m left elbow area has periodically felt like it's extremely angry at me trying to move it. I have this shooting (and yes, it does feel like I've been shot in the arm) pain that usually goes away fairly quickly but is quite scarey while it's happening. Removing tha tape from the stitched line along my arm has helped, I think, so maybe it was just rebelling against being restrained. I dunno. But, if it doesn't go away by Friday, I'm going to call and see if it's normal, if they can look at it, and such like that.

Other than that, everything seems to be jest fine, thankee very much. I have complete strength back in both hands now, and full flexibility. In fact, the physical therapist told me to go away and not bother her any more :-')

Now I can really get back to sewing- (do a happy dance!)

Surgery #2 is complete

Well. Here it is Saturday. Surgery was at 8:30 on Thursday morning and I am finally alive enough to talk about it.

The poor nurse practitioner who had to prep me for surgery bent *two* needles trying to get an IV into me. OK, so it was really poor me, as I had to suffer through two needles, for no effect except gratuitous holes in my arm. It upset my wa to the point that I actually broke out in a sweat and got ghostly pale. They were seriously thinking I was going to faint or something. Fortunately, the anesthesiologist was an expert at getting the needle into place without "losing" the patient. So, because of the problem with the IV needle, I was very awake while they were prepping me for surgery. One of the nurses kept saying "good night" to me and putting warm blankets on me (they have a special shelf that heats them up!). I kept responding with "I'm not sleepy yet", until she said it one last time and I didn't even answer because I had gone to sleepyland. But just before that happened, they were all talking about needing a bipolar, which is a lead for an electro-surgical device, and I said "but there's a bipolar here on the table". They found that hilarious for some reason :-]

The next thing I knew I was wide awake and wanting to go home. It took me longer to wake up this time than the first time around, guess this anesthesiologist was more generous with the sleepy stuff. But, the surgery went very well, and all the feeling came back in all my fingers before dawn the next day! Beldon (CompanyofWizards) was right there for the whole thing and made sure I had *everything* I could possibly desire all day- he really is the bestest. Side note- polenta is the food of the gods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arienne (kitsune814) babysat me yesterday and we had a very nice day, full of funny movies, short road trips, and good-for-our-souls foods.

Now all I have to do is hang out and take my pain pills until Monday at 3 when the bandages get changed. Then I only have to continue to heal, and will soon be back in my aerie, sewing away at myriads of projects.

I just hate not being in stitches

OK, so the first set of surgeries went so very well that I'm getting the left carpal and cubitol tunnels releases tomorrow morning at 8:30, exactly one week after getting my stitches out from the first surgery.

All is looking, and feeling good, and I'm actually looking forward to getting all over with.

I feel like I could get a part in a monster movie! And without the use of makeup or prosthetics!

Surgery went very very well last Friday. The bandages came off yesterday and my hand looks great. OK, it's three shades of blue and two shades of green, accented by black stitches, but I have feeling in all 5 fingers! And the blood-stained surgical strips across the stitched line that wanders past my bruised elbow complements the hand so very nicely.

The surgeon was very happy and the physical therapist found it hard to believe it was just released from the bandages that morning (I passed the mobility test that I think they normally give after two weeks of recovery). The stitches come out on the 11th and then it's just a case of keep on healing and get ready for the next set, which will be on November 18th.

I haven't done any sewing yet, but will probably start very slowly to get back into it a little by the end of the week, if not sooner. Oh, OK, I used the sewing machine this morning and a seam ripper as well. I even drove my car a bit. And, I did some reconnaissance work for my costume for an upcoming costume party. Then I collapsed on the couch for the rest of the day. So, see, I *do* know what my limits are, and obey them.

OK, so after beldon's carpal tunnel release surgery went so well, and as he was preparing for the next one, I agreed to go talk to the surgeon about *my* hands. As I was talking to him, I realized that I cannot remember when I could do handwork or read a book while lying on my back, or talk on the phone for any length of time, or a bunch of other stuff without one hand or the other "going to sleep". Also, I have lost a *lot* of strength in my hands in the past few months. He did some tests and made a lot of unreadable notes and told me what I had suspected all along- I, too, have "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" in both my hands.

But wait, there's more-
In an endeavor to be unique(?), I also have funny bone (scientific name = ulnar) problems. In both arms. And it's really bad.

So the upshot is that beldon, who is the greatest partner ever, has given me his surgery appointment. This means that, if I pass my physical this afternoon, I will be "going under the knife" next Thursday for carpal tunnel release and cubital tunnel (the tunnel the ulnar nerve goes through) release in my right arm.

I know there's never a good time for things like this to happen, but I hate it! I'll be getting cut on a Thursday and then be in a bandage so unable to do *anything* with my right hand until that Monday. And I have sewing to do! And there's a wedding I'm going to that Saturday! And I have sewing to do! And there's a party the next weekend that I need a costume for! And did I mention I have sewing to do!

Ah, well, it looks like I have no choice (unless I can figure out a way to fail my physical this afternoon?). The good news about all this is that, once it's done, I'll be able to sew even better than before because I'll be able to feel what I'm doing and my strength will be back.
